February crude oil CLG4 +0.28% rose 34 cents, or 0.4%, to $98.76 a barrel in electronic trading.
On Tuesday ahead of the New Year’s holiday, prices fell 87 cents, or 0.9%, to settle at $98.42 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. For the year, crude prices climbed 7.2%, according to Factset data tracking the most-active contracts.
