But the tech sector got a lift from shares of LinkedIn LNKD -4.61% , which rallied more than 4% on news that the professional social networking site has hired Derek Shen, founder and former CEO of China’s Groupon-like service, Nuomi.com, as president of LinkedIn China, signalling the company’s big push into that market.

Shares of Hewlett-Packard HPQ +0.81%  also were up 2%. Shares of Workday Inc. WDAY -1.62%  also rose 1.6%, while Oracle Corp. ORCL -0.21%  and Google Inc. GOOG -0.49%   each gained a fraction.
