The euro weakened against the U.S. dollar in afternoon trading on Monday, but held on to gains against the pound and the Japanese yen.
The shared currency EURUSD, -0.5908% fluctuated wildly during the session, moving between a session high of $1.1411 and a session low of $1.1312. It ended the day at $1.1356, about even with its level from late Friday in New York.
The common currency rose against the yen EURJPY, -0.36% to ¥139.84, from ¥139.31 late Friday in New York.
The euro EURGBP, -0.2930% also traded slightly higher against the pound, rising to 71.65 pence, from 71.50 pence on Friday.
Elsewhere, the ICE U.S. Dollar Index DXY, +0.50% a measure of the buck’s strength against a basket of currencies, was up 0.3% to 94.3880. The dollar traded higher against the pound GBPUSD, -0.3033% and the yen USDJPY, +0.22%
