Other metals also finished sharply lower. October platinum PLV5, -1.44%  shed $24.80, or 2.3%, to $1,041.50 an ounce, with prices at their lowest since the first half of 2009, while September palladium PAU5, -1.69%  lost $23.75, or 3.5%, to $652.40 an ounce, the lowest in about 2 years.

September copper HGU5, -0.59%  fell 9.15 cents, or 3.6%, to $2.447 a pound.
