Singapore Airlines kept at ‘hold’ by Maybank Kim Eng; target price unchanged at $12.40

Singapore Airlines' outlook (SIA) in the next quarter should be “moderately better” with further consolidation of capacity in 2H2015 and a pick-up in the cargo market, according to Maybank Kim Eng.

Other bullish factors include the downtrend in fuel price and incentives provided by Changi Airport to cut cost.

While the skies may turn brighter for SIA, the research house maintained its “hold” rating for the stock, citing limited upside to its target price.

“Our earnings forecasts and target price of $12.40 are unchanged,” analyst Mohshin Aziz wrote in a note dated July 16.

He said SIA’s 1QFY2016 operating statistics were generally in line with his except for the load factor, which was a touch lower. System traffic contracted 0.9% y-o-y and load factor fell 1.4 percentage points to 80%.

“Although our 1QFY16 numbers look great when compared y-o-y, they are far lower than the normal profit range of $100 million to $200 million that SIA achieves during normal years,” said Mohshin.

By 10.26am, SIA had gained 25 cents or 2.2% to $11.55, with 505,000 shares traded.
