Singapore government to co-fund Changi Airport’s expansion

The government will co-fund the expansion of Changi Airport including the construction of Terminal 5 and a third runway, local media reported.

Senior Minister of State for Transport Josephine Teo said the final cost-sharing among the various stakeholders has not been decided, The Straits Times reported.

The government knows how vital the aviation sector is and will factor this in when funding decisions are made, Teo was quoted as saying.

Changi Airport, with its spillover effect on other sectors, contributes 16% to Singapore’s GDP, she said. Last year, it handled a record 54.1 million passengers.

Terminal 5 will be built in phases and Runway 2 will close as early as in 2019 for underground tunneling works and the construction of more rapid exit taxiways when Runway 3 is completed
