SGX securities, derivatives and commodities volume rises in August

Singapore Exchange's (SGX) total equity turnover leapt 34% to $28.1 billion in August, despite fewer trading days compared to the same month last year.

Daily average traded value at the local bourse surged 49% to $1.5 billion from a year earlier.

Trading of benchmark Straits Time Index stocks represented 74% of total trading value versus 57% in August last year.

SGX says there were two new listings on Catalist last month, which raised $40 million in total and brought the total number of listed companies on the secondary board to 164.

Total market capitalisation value of 771 listed companies stood at $899 billion in August.

Meanwhile, SGX says volume of derivatives soared 82% to 17 million contracts from a year earlier, although it fell 21% m-o-m.

Volume of equity index futures climbed 76% y-o-y to 15.3 million contracts but was down 23% m-o-m.

SGX says commodities derivatives volume soared 285% y-o-y to 535,438 contracts but fell 22% m-o-m.

Iron ore derivatives volume soared 266% y-o-y to 652,981 contracts but it was 25% lower compared with last month.
Volume of freight derivatives fell 10% m-o-m to 28,164 contracts, while only 15 such contracts were recorded a year earlier.

Shares in SGX ended seven cents lower on Friday at $7.20.
