In other metals, December silver SIZ5, +0.52%  added 4.3 cents, or 0.3%, to settle at $15.907 an ounce, while high-grade copper for the same month HGZ5, +0.42% lost 2.8 cents, or 1.2%, to $2.388 a pound.

January platinum PLF6, +0.25%  shed $3.30, or 0.3%, to $992.60 an ounce, while December palladium PAZ5, +0.80%  fell $9.30, or 1.3%, to $685.35 an ounce.
