Myanmar’s opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party, tipped for a landslide victory in elections, won 15 of 16 seats in the first results announced on Monday.
The National League for Democracy (NLD) won all 12 of the first seats declared, among the 45 seats in Yangon's lower house of parliament, said the Union Election Commission’s chairperson Tin Aye at a news conference. The party also won three regional parliament seats.
Meanwhile, the Union Solidarity and Development Party won one seat in the regional parliament.
The results for some townships in Yangon were also announced, with most of them going to NLD.
The election was deemed as peaceful and stable, with only one error noted out of 1,000 polling stations, Tin Aye added.
More than 6,000 candidates from 91 political parties, along with 310 independent runners, were competing for 1,150 seats at three levels of the parliament in the historic election, the electoral commission said.
Of those, NLD fed 1,123 candidates, followed closely by the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), which had 1,122 runners.
However, Suu Kyi is prevented from being nominated for president as both her sons are British citizens. The current constitution bars anyone with close foreign-born relatives from becoming president.
An estimated 33.5 million eligible voters cast their votes at more than 46,000 polling stations nationwide in Sunday's elections.
