Singapore’s exports slump 9.9% in January; 3rd straight month of contraction

Non-oil domestic exports (NODX) in Singapore slumped last month, hit by another sharp decline in non-electronic exports, latest figures released by International Enterprise (IE) Singapore show on Wednesday. This was third straight month of contraction.

Compared with a year earlier, NODX shrank 9.9 per cent in January, worse than expected, after contracting 7.2% in December.

Exports of non-electronic products fell 13.9%, after slipping 10.3% the previous month. The decline was led by petrochemicals (-18.3%), pumps (-72.3%) and primary chemicals (-45.8%).

Electronic exports dipped 0.6%, after a 0.3% fall in December.

Exports to all of Singapore’s top 10 markets – except the European Union and Malaysia – fell in January.

Non-oil re-exports (NORX) saw a sharp decline in January, sliding 12% compared with the 0.8% growth the previous month.
