Singtel’s telco unit in Australia, Optus, has acquired new regional licences in the 1800 MHz spectrum band.
The acquisition of 2 x 20 MHz in five regions and 2 x 25 MHz in seven regions totalled $196 million.
The 1800 MHz band is the most popular spectrum globally for 4G Long Term Evolution (LTE) deployment and is compatible with the vast majority of 4G devices currently used in Australia.
The acquisition enables the telco to expand its 4G network coverage to more places around Australia, Optus says.
Its mobile network currently reaches 98.5% of the Australian population, with 4G services now available for more than 90% of Australians.
Singtel closed 0.9% lower at $3.48.
