In other metals, May silver SIK6, -0.26% lost 6 cents, or 0.4%, to close at $16.253 an ounce. High-grade copper for May delivery HGK6, -0.09% gained 1.15 cents, or 0.5%, to end at $2.1645 a pound.

July platinum PLN6, +0.38%  lost $12.10, or 1.2%, to finish at $977.80 an ounce, while June palladium PAM6, -0.18%  ended 25 cents, or less than 0.1%, lower at $568 an ounce.
