Back on Nymex, June gasoline RBN6, -0.10% fell 2.2 cents, or 1.4%, to $1.62 a gallon and June heating oil HOM6, +0.15% lost 1.1 cents, or 0.8%, to $1.501 a gallon
Natural-gas futures ended lower after the EIA said U.S. supplies rose 71 billion cubic feet for the week ended May 20. That was above the 68 billion-cubic-foot rise expected by analysts polled by S&P Global Platts.
The expiration of the June natural-gas futures contracts at the settlement contributed to market volatility. June natural gas NGM16, -3.56% settled at $1.963 per million British thermal units, down 2.9 cents, or 1.5%. July natural gas NGN16, -0.33% which became the front-month contract, lost 3 cents, or 1.4%, to $2.151.
