Shares of Microsoft Corp. jumped early Friday on news that
Chief Executive Steve Ballmer was retiring, giving the tech sector an early
lift. Microsoft was up 7% at $34.58 as the software giant announced that Ballmer
will be stepping down in 12 months. On the other hand, shares of Pandora Media
Inc.
Slumped more than 9% after the Internet-radio company posted a
disappointing outlook. The Nasdaq Composite Index gained 26 points, or 0.5%, to
3,655. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was up a fraction.
