T-Mobile TMUS +8.65%  shares for their part jumped to close up 8.7% Friday, and pared some of those gains after hours, declining 0.7% to $27.46 on heavy volume.

If approved by regulators, the merging of the third- and fourth-largest wireless carriers would present a more formidable competitor to much-larger AT&T Inc. T -0.12%  and Verizon Communications Inc. VZ -0.60%
