The data also showed a surprise rise in gasoline stockpiles. Gasoline for June delivery RBM6, -0.25%  0.48 cent, or 0.3%, to close at $1.4914 a gallon, after finishing 1.6% lower on Wednesday.

June natural gas NGM16, +0.39%  declined 6.5 cents, or 3%, to $2.076 per million British thermal units, while June heating oil HOM6, -0.17%  rose 0.05 cent, or less than 0.1%, to $1.3287 a gallon.
