December crude oil CLZ3 +0.18% shed 39 cents, or 0.4%, to settle $96.38 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Compared with the close of $102.33 a barrel for the front-month contract at the end of September, prices lost 5.8% for the month — their second monthly loss in a row. The settlement was the lowest for a most-active contract since June 26, FactSet data show.
