Meanwhile, the tech sector edged lower as shares of Microsoft Corp. MSFT +0.09%  and IBM Corp. IBM +0.34%  retreated. Microsoft was down 2.2%, while IBM gave up 1.6%.

The group got a lift from Hewlett-Packard HPQ +0.11%  which was up 2% and Apple AAPL +0.11%  which gained 0.5%.  
 The Nasdaq Composite Index COMP -1.47%  was down 1.2%. The Morgan Stanley High Tech 35 Index MSH -0.75%  and the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index SOX -1.13%  were each down a fraction.
