Taiwan: Stocks rise on bargain hunting as financials recover

Taiwan stocks rose on Thursday on bargain hunting after recent lows, with shares in Mega Financial, the focus of a local probe by prosecutors, rising for the first time in five sessions.

As of 0153 GMT, the main Taiex index rose 0.5 per cent, to 9,060.28, after closing 0.2 per cent lower in the previous session.

The electronics subindex rose 0.7 per cent, while the financials subindex gained 0.9 per cent.

Among active counters, Mega Financial was up over one per cent.

After being hit by a rare fine in the US for anti-money laundering violations, local prosecutors earlier this week began their own investigation on whether the financial giant broke any local criminal laws.

The Taiwan dollar firmed T$0.017 to T$31.755 per US dollar.Click Here To Register For Free Trial Services OR Give A Missed Call : +6531581402 Follow Us On Twitter : www.twitter.com/epicresearchsg Like Us On Facebook : www.facebook.com/EpicResearchSingapore Need Any Assistance Feel Free To Mail Us at : info@epicresearch.sg

Seoul: Won rebounds on US dollar selling, stocks firmer

The South Korean won rebounded early on Tuesday as investors sold the greenback, taking profits after it strengthened sharply over the past two sessions.

The won was quoted at 1,118.5 as of 0206 GMT, up 0.7 per cent compared with Monday's close of 1,126.5.

"The won has been reacting to the dollar's movements most sensitively among Asian currencies recently, which would explain today's sharp rise," said Jeong My Young, a foreign exchange analyst at Samsung Futures.

She added that investors will turn their attention to a speech by Fed Chair Janet Yellen in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, later this week for the won's next moves, although direct hints about the US Federal Reserve's next policy move seems unlikely.Click Here To Register For Free Trial Services OR Give A Missed Call : +6531581402 Follow Us On Twitter : www.twitter.com/epicresearchsg Like Us On Facebook : www.facebook.com/EpicResearchSingapore Need Any Assistance Feel Free To Mail Us at : info@epicresearch.sg

US dollar drops after Fed minutes dampen hike expectations

The US dollar dropped Thursday as records from the Federal Reserve's last meeting dampened hopes of an imminent US interest rate hike.

Minutes from the US central bank's July gathering said policymakers were keeping their "options open" but remained divided on the threat of inflation.

A hike in US borrowing costs would tend to lift the dollar by stirring demand for dollar-denominated assets, so Wednesday's minutes weighed on the unit.

The news comes after William Dudley, the influential head of the Federal Reserve's New York branch, unexpectedly hinted this week that a rate hike was possible as early as September.Click Here To Register For Free Trial Services OR Give A Missed Call : +6531581402 Follow Us On Twitter : www.twitter.com/epicresearchsg Like Us On Facebook : www.facebook.com/EpicResearchSingapore Need Any Assistance Feel Free To Mail Us at : info@epicresearch.sg

Stocks to watch: Ezra, Swiber, OUE, CapitaLand, Mapletree Commercial Trust, Frasers Commercial Trust

THE overnight rally on Wall Street may fuel trading activities here on Thursday trading, with trading cues coming from companies releasing their quarterly earnings results and some capital-raising updates.
But it remains to be seen if sentiment hanging over the oil and gas sector will continue to rear its ugly head.
In response to articles saying that Ezra Holdings was looking for fresh capital, the offshore marine company clarified on Wednesday night that it reviews options to preserve value for both the company and its shareholders an ongoing basis and to strengthen its financial position. In relation to this, it holds discussions with parties regarding possible transactions, which may include potential fund raising via new loans, issue of new securities, sale of non-core assets, or refinancing of existing loans.
But no definitive agreements in relation to any transactions have been entered into by the company or its subsidiaries, and there can be no assurance or reasonable certainty that any discussions or prospects will be successfully concluded, Ezra said.

At Google I/O on Wednesday, Google unveiled the newest version of Android called L. This is Google's most ambitious update to Android yet; it's a complete reinvention of Android's UI design.

Taking elements from iOS 7 and Windows Phone 8, L features new colors, new notifications and brand new design guidelines.

Google set out Wednesday to expand its Android empire beyond smartphones to cars, watches and televisions.

"We are beginning to evolve our platforms beyond mobile," Android and Chrome teams chief Sundar Pichai said of how Google's twin operating systems are being adapted to work with one another and with new types of computing hardware.

.
EBay EBAY -0.15%  said the attack occurred “between late February and early March” and involved breaching a database that contained passwords and other nonfinancial data . Epic Research Singapore : McDonald Market News Update

Police on Wednesday arrested more than 100 demonstrators seeking better pay for McDonald's workers as protesters swarmed the fast-food chain's corporate campus near Chicago to demand a minimum wage of US$15 an hour and the right to unionise.

The latest protest against McDonald's Corp, the world's biggest restaurant operator by revenue, came a day ahead of a shareholder vote on executive pay, including that of Chief Executive Don Thompson, who earned total compensation of US$9.5 million in 2013.

Frequent rallies by low-wage restaurant and retailer workers have helped fuel a national debate on pay inequality at a time when many middle- to low-income Americans are having trouble making ends meet.
Jessica Davis, a 25-year-old McDonald's crew trainer with two children, said CEO Thompson is earning his millions on the backs of working mothers and fathers. "We need to show McDonald's that we're serious and that we're not backing down," said Ms Davis, who works at a Chicago McDonald's and earns US$8.98 per hour.

Epic Research Singapore : Malaysia Airlines Market News Update

Malaysian Airlines earnings set to show financial burden of loss of MH370

Malaysian Airlines will report first-quarter earnings later on Thursday that are set to provide confirmation of just how badly the already loss-making carrier's finances have been hit by the vanishing of flight MH370 on March 8.

The carrier known as MAS reported a net loss of 343 million Malaysian ringgit (US$106 million) for the last quarter of 2013, squeezed between AirAsia Bhd on short-haul routes, and Gulf carriers and AirAsia X in the medium and long-haul market. The first-quarter numbers are expected after the close of trading on the Malaysian stock exchange on Thursday.

Its worst quarter on record was in October-December 2011, when a series of one-off provisions related to jet deliveries and maintenance pushed it to a 1.28 billion ringgit net loss.

Epic Research Singapore : Apple & Google Market News Update

Apple Inc and Google Inc are wooing game developers to ensure that top game titles arrive first on devices powered by their respective operating system, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

Both the companies are trying to lure game developers by offering premium placement to these games on their app stores'home pages and features lists, the daily said. Both Google and Apple were not immediately available for comment outside regular U.S. business hours.

Apple had struck a deal with Electronic Arts Inc last August to promote the game "Plants Vs Zombies 2" prominently in its App Store, and had a similar arrangement with ZeptoLab to promote the sequel to its popular puzzle game "Cut the Rope", which released in December, the Journal reported.

Epic Research Singapore : Malaysia Airline Market News Update

A United States Navy deep-sea drone is diving to unprecedented depths to scour a remote stretch of the Indian Ocean floor for a missing Malaysian jetliner as the Malaysian government said it may use more remote control submarines to help with the search.

The Bluefin-21 and its "side scan" sonar has become the focal point of the search 2,000km west of the Australian city of Perth, where authorities believe Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 hit the ocean after disappearing from radars on March 8 with 239 people on board.

Now in its seventh week, the search has centred on a city-sized area where a series of "pings" led authorities to believe the plane's black box may be located. But after almost two weeks without a signal, and long past the black box battery's 30-day life expectancy, authorities have turned to the Bluefin-21.

After the US$4 million Bluefin-21's searches were frustrated by an automatic safety mechanism which returns it to the surface when it exceeds a depth of 4.5km, authorities have adjusted the mechanism and have sent it as deep as 4,695m, a record.

Epic Research Singapore : Android Market News Update

The Google Android platform grabbed the majority of mobile phones in the US market in early 2014, as consumers all but abandoned non-smartphone handsets, a survey showed Friday.

The poll by Consumer Intelligence Research Partners found 53 per cent of new mobile phones activated by US customers were Android devices in the January-March period.

Apple's iOS, the platform used by the iPhone, accounted for 42 per cent, the survey found.

Windows and BlackBerry devices each accounted for one percent, while non-smartphones were just three percent, the research firm said. Late last year 20 per cent bought a "basic" mobile phone.

Epic Research Singapore :Microsoft Market News Update

Microsoft Corp. on Thursday said it has sold more than five million Xbox One consoles to retail shops since the product was launched in November.

The company hadn't provided sales figures since early January, when said it sold 3.9 million units through the end of 2013.

Microsoft's statement comes a day after rival Sony Corp. said it sold more than seven million PlayStation 4 units, up from six million it had counted in March. Sony has released sales to consumers, while Microsoft in January said it would thereafter only release sales to retailers that carry the console.

Despite the difference in methodologies, the statements from the companies reinforce Sony's apparent lead over Microsoft since they released their new consoles in November.

Microsoft emphasized the positive comparison with its prior system. "The new generation is off to a strong start, with global Xbox One sales outpacing Xbox 360 by more than 60 percent at the same point in time," said Yusuf Mehdi, head of the Xbox division's marketing, strategy and business, in a statement.

Epic Research Singapore : Malaysia Airline Market Update

MH370 search to be most costly ever at US$100m

The search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 is set to be the most expensive in aviation history, analysts say, as efforts to find the aircraft deep under the Indian Ocean show no signs of slowing.

Australia, which is leading the search in a remote patch of water described as "unknown to man", has not put a figure on spending, but Malaysia has warned that costs will be "huge".

"When we look at salvaging (wreckage) at a depth of 4.5 kilometres (2.8 miles), no military out there has the capacity to do it," Transport and Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said Thursday.

Epic Research Singapore : Facebook Market News Update

Facebook Inc is preparing to join the mobile-payments race with remittances and electronic-money services on the social network, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing several people involved in the process.

The company is close to obtaining approval from the Central Bank of Ireland to start a service that would allow users to store money on Facebook and use it to pay and exchange with others, the people told the FT.

The company has also had partnership talks with at least three London start-ups - TransferWise, Moni Technologies and Azimo - that offer online and mobile international money transfer services, three people involved in the discussions told FT.

Facebook's specific plans, including which countries the electronic-money services would be available in, were not immediately clear.
