October heating oil HOV4, -1.95% declined 5.7 cents, or 2.1%, to end at $2.6472 a gallon. It lost 7.3% over the month, and 11% in the quarter, the steepest quarterly decline since the second quarter of 2012.
November natural gas futures NGX14, +0.22% stumbled 3 cents, or 0.8%, to settle at $4.1210 per million British thermal units. On the quarter, the commodity fell 7.6%, its largest quarterly decline since the second quarter of 2013. Natural-gas futures, however, gained 1.4% in September.
