The dollar edged lower against the euro Thursday after data showed first-time claims for U.S. unemployment benefits rose more than expected last week.
The euro EURUSD, -0.27% traded at $1.0825, compared with $1.0724 late Wednesday.
The dollar USDJPY, -0.02% slipped to 119.58 yen after trading above the ¥120 level for the first time in nine days, buoyed earlier in the day by improved sentiment that has kept the Nikkei Stock Average above the 20,000 mark. The buck traded at ¥119.92 late Wednesday in New York.
The ICE dollar index DXY, +0.09% a measure of the U.S. currency against a basket of six major rivals, was fractionally lower at 97.261.
The New Zealand dollar NZDUSD, -0.53% fell to $0.7594 from $0.7625.
On Thursday, the euro was worth 1.0333 Swiss francs EURCHF, -0.03% compared with 1.0409 late Wednesday and 1.0257 francs Tuesday afternoon. One dollar was worth 0.9546 compared with 0.9705 late Wednesday and 0.9553 on Tuesday.
The WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, +0.14% a measure of the dollar against a basket of major currencies, was unchanged at 86.75.
