Other metals prices also declined Monday. September silver SIU5, -0.19% often considered a cheaper alternative to gold, settled 7.6 cents, or 0.5%, lower at $14.758 an ounce. October platinum PLV5, -1.27%  skidded $12.70, or 1.3%, to $988.60 an ounce, while September palladium PAU5, -1.17% shed $6.95, or 1.1%, to $612.05 an ounce.

September copper HGU5, +0.16%  ended at $2.482 a pound, down 1.5 cents, or 0.6%.
