The U.S. dollar edged lower against the yen as currency investors wagered that the Federal Reserve will keep key interest rates unchanged this month, but fear that the central bank might surprise the market weighed on investors’ minds.
Like investors in many major asset classes, currency market participants are keenly awaiting the outcome of one of the most closely watched rate decisions in some time.
The dollar USDJPY, -0.10% lost 0.3% against the yen to trade at ¥120.2390 in late Monday trade, compared with ¥120.57 late Friday in New York.
The ICE dollar index DXY, -0.05% a measure of the U.S. unit against a basket of six major rivals, was little changed at 95.247.
The WSJ Dollar Index BUXX, -0.06% a measure of the dollar against a wider basket of major currencies, ticked down about 0.1% at 88.19. The dollar gauge has been down in three consecutive trading sessions, according to Dow Jones data.
Meanwhile, the euro lost 0.2%, EURUSD, +0.0442% and was at $1.1318 in late Monday trade in New York compared with $1.1337 late Friday, snapping a six-session win streak against the dollar, according to Dow Jones data.
In other currencies, the Turkish lira USDTRY, -0.1962% sank to a record low against the dollar on Monday, hit by political turmoil and fears of an economic slowdown.
