Meanwhile, silver for July delivery SIN6, -0.09% which saw higher open interest than the May contract, gained 17.6 cents, or 1%, to settle at $17.335 an ounce — the highest in more than 11 months.

Rounding out metals trading Wednesday, July copper HGN6, +0.18%  fell 2.2 cents, or 1%, to $2.225 a pound. July platinum PLN6, +0.61% rose $5.30, or 0.5%, to $1,025.40 an ounce, while June palladium PAM6, +0.87% added $5.15, or 0.9%, to $609.65 an ounce.
