Brazilian rep not charged for fraud against competitive bidding, illegal cartel activities, says Keppel

Keppel Corporation says commercial representative in Brazil Zwi Skornicki has not been charged for illegal cartel activities and fraud against competitive bidding, though there is evidence of such crimes.

This was the information it obtained from a copy of the charge sheet against Skornicki drawn up by the Brazilian Public Prosecutor's Office.

According to the copy sighted by Keppel, instead Skornicki has been charged with corruption, criminal conspiracy and money laundering, together with seven other individuals.

Keppel had announced on Feb 9 that allegations were made by Pedro Jose Barusco in Brazil that illegal payments were made by Skornicki in connection with contracts entered into between certain Keppel entities with Petrobras and/or Sete Brasil.

Skornicki was subsequently arrested and, according to media reports, the Brazilian prosecutors had charged him with corruption.

“As mentioned in our earlier announcements, the agency relationship between Keppel’s entities and Mr Skornicki had been put on hold pending determination by the relevant authorities into the allegations made on the matter,” says Keppel in a filing last night.

Keppel reiterated its zero-tolerance stance against any form of illegal activity, including bribery and corruption, involving its employees or associates, and will take all necessary steps to eradicate such conduct if discovered.

Keppel last closed at $5.31.
